Ikechi Agbugba (Ph.D) – Agribusiness Management
Dr. Agbugba was raised at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Campus, where he attended the University’s Primary and Secondary Schools and graduated in 1991 and 1997, respectively.
He gained admission to the University of Nigeria in 1998 to study Agricultural Economics at the University of Nigeria, where he earned a BSc in 2003, MSc in 2008 and a Ph.D. in 2014.
After his first degree, during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Batch A of the 2004/05 set, he was posted to Gombe State in the North-East Nigeria, where he served. More so, during the period of his NYSC, he was appointed State President/Chairman, as well as a National Delegate/Representative of a Corpers’ Association, Gombe State Chapter and National Headquarters, Jos, Plateau State, respectively.
It is pertinent to note that he specialized in Agricultural Marketing and Agribusiness Management option, and has conducted researches in this area for about 2 decades. Since part of his duties as a postdoc was to cosupervise PG candidates (especially MSc and Ph.D. degree) students, he successfully produced over 10 PG students. However, prior to his academic experience, he has gained corporate experience at the Technologies Platform Business Resources Limited, Ikoyi Lagos State, where he served as Head, Business Development and Human Resources Management.
As a Field Research Officer, he has also gained experience with a World Bank-Assisted Project in Ikeja, Lagos State. He served as Deputy Vice President, Agrilink International Inc. with headquarters in USA and publishers of the Nigerian Agriculture Magazine.
Presently, he is the Senior Research Fellow of Africa Agriculture Agenda (AAA), an arm of Surveillance Media Limited, Lagos State championing business collaboration towards the transformation of Africa’s agriculture/agribusiness sector.
In addition to that, he is serving as University teacher/researcher in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, Rivers State University, where he trains/mentors both undergraduate and PG students.
Regarding articles and publication, he has over 30 articles, a chunk of which are published in international academic proceedings and refereed journals. More so, he has featured and still features as an invited reviewer of papers journal and publishing enterprises. Furthermore, he has moderated, as well as spoken in international conferences in countries, such as Nigeria, Malaysia, India, South Africa, USA, and Mauritius.
Recently, he was selected as an academia/researcher stakeholder in the Feed-the-Future programme of the USAID Global Food Security Strategy Whole-System Workshop, Abuja. In Nov 2018, he presented a keynote address at the Agriculture, Food and Aqua Conference which held in Cape Town, South Africa. He is also the recipient of the ‘Excellence Award’ as ‘Agro-Economist of the year’ in the 2017 Conference of the Pan African Agricultural Journalists, Ikeja, Lagos State.
His professional and career vision is geared towards contributing to the on-going transformational and developmental initiatives in rural communities, analysis of agricultural systems, natural resource decision-making, and development of teaching and management support tools, as well as identifying and strengthening the capacities and potentials of the rural communities through extension programmes in line with food and agribusiness activities, thereby ensuring poverty alleviation and food security.
